The Youth Empowerment and Research Seminar (YEARS) is designed to provide urban high school students with the opportunity to investigate critical issues that influence democratic participation and the educational achievement of youth.

In partnership with Pepperdine University and several high schools from the Los Angeles Unified School District's (LAUSD) District 6, the YEARS Project will take place August 19 - 29, 2008.

Approximately 12 to 15 high school students will work with a team of university professors, graduate students, and high school teachers to develop and research different aspects of education and democracy. The second week of the seminar will take place at the 2008 Democratic National Convention in Denver, Colorado. Students will have the opportunity to travel to the convention as they investigate multiple research interests. These include:

  • Civic Engagement
  • Access to Higher Education
  • Health Care
  • Immigration
  • Technology

Students will have the opportunity to work with elected officals, subject-area experts, advocates, and other high school youth.

We believe the opportunity to research these subjects will be a transformative experience for students to become leaders on their campuses and in their communities.
